Materials are chosen once and lived with every day. The question is not only how a surface looks when it is new, but how it looks after a thousand ordinary mornings.
Surfaces that improve with use
Solid wood, natural stone with a honed finish, unlacquered brass and linen all show wear, and that is the point. Scratches and patina blend in instead of standing out.
- Oiled wood can be sanded and oiled again; lacquered wood usually cannot.
- Honed stone hides marks better than polished stone.
- Uncoated brass darkens evenly over time.
Surfaces that need a plan
High-gloss fronts, dark matt worktops and white grout look sharp at handover and tired within a year unless they are cleaned often. They are not a mistake, just choose them knowing the upkeep.
Look at samples in your own light
A sample under shop lighting is a different colour at home. Take samples home, put them where they will be used and look at them in the morning and in the evening before you decide.
